close out any credit card accounts with a zero balance?

When you have a credit card, they give you a limit which is the maximum credit you may charge.  As long as that account is still in effect, you still have that credit limit available.  You are considered a good credit risk.  Close that account and what happens?? You DON'T have that credit available and the less available credit you have, the worse your credit score.
