As a rule of thumb, I try not to cancel any credit card that does not have a monthly fee associated with it. Closing an old account will reduce your average credit age and decrease your total available credit as opposed to keeping the old one and adding a new line. Most CC companies do not have a problem issuing seperate cards, for example you can have mulitple Cap One cards or Chase cards.

Just keep the old accounts open and make and pay off in full a few small purchases each month.
