You can, but I'd recommend talking to a bankruptcy attorney before going ahead.  Your Social Security cannot be garnished for anything other than taxes, alimony or child support.  If your debts are "unsecured" (credit cards, revolving charge accounts, personal loans) there is nothing  someone can try to sell to recoup the money. Such unsecured debts are also "low man on the totem pole" when it comes to distribution of assets in a bankruptcy. 

A good bankruptcy attorney can provide suggestions and advice for you that may help you totally avoid the damage that would be caused by bankruptcy.
