You can.  A neighbor from years ago did so since his wife died of cancer, he had tens of thousands of dollars in bills and was a log-truck driver, and the bankruptcy sure took a load off his shoulders.  But only do so after checking what aid arrangements can be made through Drs and hospitals and if the issue has been resolved. Not a good idea to file bankruptcy if the bills are just going to pile up again.
