First, go to annualcreditreport.com and get copies of all three credit reports.  Look them over very carefully and file disputes on all WRONG information with the credit bureau reporting same.  They have to investigate and either verify or delete said items. Make this something you do once a year, every year.

As for these old items, these collectors should have sent you something in the mail.  Have they?  If not, they are in violation of the FDCPA and you could collect damages from them.  Debts older than the maximum statute of limitations for your state (look up Statute of Limitations for Collections and find the information on your state) are uncollectable, PERIOD!!
