Public records generally remain on your report for seven years. They fall off on their own after that time frame.

I believe it takes 10 years for public records. Stuff like taxes. Even if it's one day late. They report it without telling you. There is NO grace period. I know this from experience.

The way credit repair companies work is by challenging what is on the credit report (debt verification). This can work sometimes, but often the accounts drop off temporarily and then re-appear. If you have paid an account in collections, there is the possibility that they will not bother to re-report the debt after it has been challenged.
