You want to have excellent credit before you go get a home loan. With a mediocre credit report/score, you will pay more in interest. That means for every $100,000 you spend on a home, it will cost you and extra $100/month for every % point they tack on above market rates.  Over many years, you could have almost bought another home with that extra cash you are spending. Even with excellent credit, banks prefer a 20% down payment these days anyway. I would wait if I were you. The housing market won't even break even on its losses for another 10-20 years. You got time :)
