Can a phone company that you are no longer with wait 5 years to add something to your credit?
I was with Tmobile 5 years ago, and this past year they reported a late fee to a collection company and my credit took a major hit. Can I dsipute why they waited so long to do so?

Yes, they can report at any time they want.  However, if the late payment is older than 2 years, then it does not affect your credit score.  The account has gone to a collection company, which means you have an unpaid balance, not a late payment.  It will stay on your credit report for 7 & 1/2 years from the date it went delinquent.
