Why not pay it?

If the bad report is for a debt you have been late in paying and it is still within the statute of limitations for collections, then pay it off.  Bankruptcy will remain on your record for 10 years from the date of filing and should only be used if one has a large amount to lose if bk not filed.

Negative remarks on your credit reports are not a good reason for filing bankruptcy (which won't removed those remarks anyway).  Paying ones bills on time is the best way to avoid negatives on your credit report.
