It has some good intro offers, but Chase
Helpful to 43 out of 46 people

It had some good intro offers, but Chase is not a very user-friendly company. Over the years, they often call me with "offers," and in the past, these employees do not listen they just yell through their spiel and ask, "Is that OK?" If you say anything but "no" throughout the conversation, they'll say you accepted the offer, including "protection" on accounts that can be $25/month that you have to call to have removed. Even when I pay off cards, they offer no more offers for balance transfers, so now it's just another high interest rate credit card I barely use, but it is Visa and works almost everywhere.

credit karma recommended AND PROMOTED credit cards as a way to bring up my score.

I've recently also gone on a brigade ot get my fiancial history in line. Credit Karma is great for getting two detailed credit reports every week, but you may be better off looking for credit card offers on other sites, as most of their card offers usually only approve excellent credit scores.

I recently used a different site, www.myfico.com (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to other sites here but myfico offers a lot of free good info much like CK), which categorizes credit cards by the average credit score approved for the specific card. Although my scores are in the "Good" range, I also explored cards in the "Fair" and even "Excellent" range for good measure, and ended up getting approved for a card in the "excellent" range. The score reported to them was in the excellent range, even though all other reports given to me were only "good."

Of course, I also googled all the cards I was interested in and researched them on a number of sites before deciding to apply.

Additionally, I had been aware of the scores reported to credit providers because I recently applied for a Lending Club loan and was denied due to income verification issues. Nonetheless, Lending Club showed me my credit score reported to them and it was much higher than what is shown on CK. I applied for the card with that in mind.

The Big 3 credit bureaus also openly state that the report they provide the consumer can be both different in score and details from the report they provide to lenders. These scores can be better OR worse. This is a big issue for a lot of consumers. I wish it could be more transparent, because credit score has to do with identity fraud as much as mainting good credit.

CK is very convenient as a website, and most of the info and advice is on the good side. Still, you have to be extra careful when shopping for credit cards, and really think of it like shopping for something that is both expensive and will need to be used for a long time. When I was younger, I remember a lot of advice about avoiding getting credit lines and cards at the mall, at college football games, etc. Now with the internet, consumers have a lot more power to get as much info as possible before receiving credit. We should definitely take advantage of all the resources open to us.

Good luck in your credit apps!

A "technology company"
Helpful to 3 out of 3 people

They call themselves a "technology company." That's because their main goal is to collect your data. They will not protect your data or erase it even if you close the line of credit. Beware of this company and their lack of respect for users' data.

Being approved for an Income based student loan repayment plan lowered my credit score!!!

The same thing happened to me.
Helpful to 3 out of 3 people

The exact same thing happened to me, and it was because the average age of my accounts dropped significantly, because my original student loans (I also consolidated), which were 5-6 accounts with various ages all over 5 years were closed for the new IBR consolidated loan, which was 1 new loan and 0 years old. In the end, the dent in my score was worth it, because my interest rate on my student loans is much lower now and my payments are more manageable, and I also like my new loan provider, but it will still take several years for the age of my accounts to recover, unfortunately.

CK says I have very good approval odds.

They do a credit inquiry and then denied me. I have been denied a few time over the years, even though I gain more income, and CK tells me that I have very good odds of approval. Even LC preapproved me, but rejected me later.

Not a bad card, and a easy interface.

The Discover mobile app and online account is very convenient. Statements are also very clear and concise. Also, my experience with customer service is friendly and helpful. I mostly got this card because I travel a lot, and there is no foreign transaction fee. Unfortunately, when I tried to use this card in a number of countries where it stated it "could possibly" be used, I could not actually use it, so I am giving 4 stars.

That is horrible. The absolute worst. I am glad you were able to get away from such a predatory lender.
