The Benefits oh the benefits

$550 is a ton for a card. Luckily you can start to chip away at that number (at least in your head) with the various benefits and points you can accrue.

I use it solely for flights and hotels. 5x points is amazing and makes accumulating points fast. Don't use it for anything else though because you'll be missing out on higher points earnings you could have with a different card. Like the new AMEX Gold with 4x points on dining and groceries.

I have cards for certain things and this Platinum is my go-to for travel (provided it's planes or hotels).

Huge Improvement over PRG
Helpful to 26 out of 28 people

I have had the Premier Rewards Gold card for 13yrs. Granted it wasn't always PRG but was always the Gold card. I used it for most everything but primarily fining dining out, gas, and groceries. I re cently upgraded that card to the Platinum and was using Chase cards for dining and gas. I picked up the Blue Cash Preferred for groceries (6%).

When this new gold (or rose gold in my case) AMEX was announced I got it that same day. 4x points on dining and on groceries was just killer. Sure it lost the gas aspect, but I have other cards with good gas returns.

And while it's dumb (to an extent) I'm glad the new card is metal. It made no sense that the old card was $195 and plastic and my Amazon Prime card was free and metal. They upped their game and its fantastic.

Looking forward to all of the extra points I'll pick up eating out with 4x points!

Should have gone with Reserve
Helpful to 19 out of 20 people

So I have had this card for a year and I do like it for dining out and travel. However I really should have just gone straight for the Reserve card and not looked back. Now with the new Gold card from AMEX I no longer use this for dining. I also have better airfare cards (Platinum AMEX).

Once I am at month 13 I will be looking to product change this to the Reserve. It comes out only being $55 more than this a year and has better point accumulation and perks. Once I do, that will be my go-to for travel (aside from airfare and hotel). Though I will use it to book in order to cover the $300 credit.

Pairing this card (or the Reserve) with the Freedom card is perfect as you can take those 5% categories and turn them into regular Ultimate Rewards Points to transfer to airlines or do with what you want. The value bonus is great.

Great for Groceries and Gas
Helpful to 20 out of 22 people

I've had this card for a few months and use it exclusively for groceries and gas. I've been with AMEX for 13yrs and this is my first credit card from them (vs charge card). I upgraded my PRG AMEX to the Platinum back in the summer. Now that the Gold card has changed I have picked that up again (keeping Platinum). With the rewards from the Gold card I don't expect to keep this card, but on its own it is a solid card and the best you can get for those categories.

Perfect for Groceries & Gas
Helpful to 15 out of 17 people

Been with AMEX for 13yrs and this is my first credit card with them. I've only ever had charge cards from AMEX in the past but I was looking for something with better rewards for groceries and gas was just a nice kicker. 6% back is hard to beat and though it's unfortunate that it is capped its still a nice card to have in your wallet.

I just got the new Gold card and 4x points at groceries is on that now as well. So I'm not sure if I will be keeping this card or not, but it's a hard one to part with.

Good for Priority Boarding
Helpful to 13 out of 17 people

I hate waiting in line and the priority boarding is what sold me on this card. Plus 60k miles sign up bonus was definitely solid. I have other cards that earn more miles with flights but this is a nice backup should I be looking to check bags and save some money. Fee alone is worth early boarding imo.
