If you have an eligible Visa Signature card, you likely have access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection benefits. But how can you make the most of them?

The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection is a hand-selected group of more than 900 hotels, many of which cost around $299 per night. If you’re a budget traveler, this may not be the program for you, but if you lean toward luxury, read on.

We’ll walk you through the benefits, how you can access them and how the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection stacks up against The Hotel Collection from American Express Travel.

What benefits do Visa Signature cards offer at Visa Signature hotels?

When you book through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection as an eligible Visa Signature cardholder, you gain access to seven Visa Signature hotel benefits.

  • Best available rate guarantee
  • An automatic room upgrade when you arrive (if available)
  • Complimentary in-room Wi-Fi (if available)
  • Complimentary breakfast for two
  • A $25 food or beverage credit per room, per stay
  • VIP guest status
  • Late checkout when requested (if available)

What types of properties are included in the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection?

The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection offers properties worldwide at a variety of price points.

While some properties may be out of reach for the average traveler’s budget, there are still plenty of hotels under $299 per night. And while rooms can cost more than $1,000 per night, a few properties have nights available starting at under $100.

On the high end of the scale, Visa Signature hotels include Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa.

On the more budget-friendly end, Visa Signature hotels offer properties like The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa.

How do you use the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection benefits?

To qualify for the benefits associated with the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, you must book your stay through VisaLuxuryHotelCollection.com, or by calling the Visa Concierge at 1-800-953-7392.

But what happens if you forget to book through the website or Visa Concierge?

“You won’t get the Visa Signature benefits if you make a reservation directly through the hotel or through other booking websites,” says Holly Johnson, co-founder of Club Thrifty.

You must also book and pay for your stay with an eligible Visa Signature card in good standing in order to receive the benefits. However, your card won’t be charged until checkout, unless you’re notified otherwise during the reservation process.

Keep in mind, the hotel may charge additional taxes and fees, including resort fees, which may not be included when booking your reservation.

If resort fees include benefits such as free Wi-Fi or complimentary breakfast, you might be losing out on benefits offered by booking through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection.

You can ask the front desk or hotel management for a replacement benefit, but hotels aren’t obligated to offer one.

Comparing the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection to The Hotel Collection from American Express Travel

American Express Travel offers benefits with The Hotel Collection for select cardholders.

Beyond earning or paying with points, there are only two main travel benefits of The Hotel Collection, and only on stays of at least two consecutive nights. The first is a room upgrade at check-in, if available. And the other is a versatile hotel perk: a $100 credit to spend on qualifying dining, spa and resort activities.

But the program has a clear drawback — you can’t access its benefits for a single-night stay.

“Unlike with the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, American Express Travel’s The Hotel Collection only offers benefits when you stay two or more consecutive nights,” Johnson says.

Also, the only way to access American Express Travel’s The Hotel Collection is by using a card with an annual fee.

Maximizing the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection benefits

Maximizing the benefits of the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection is about making sure you take advantage of what’s offered by the program.

It may be helpful to print a list of benefits from the Visa Signature website and bring it with you, or be ready to pull it up on your phone, in case a hotel employee is unfamiliar with the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection benefits.

Sadly, not all benefits will be available at all hotels. But you can always check if the hotel can provide a substitute benefit. For instance, if a hotel doesn’t offer breakfast, you can ask to see if a substitute benefit is available.

Any substitutions made are at the hotel’s discretion, but asking may get you an equivalent food and beverage credit to use as you wish.

This may include charges made directly to your room, such as resort fees and hotel purchases, as long as the purchase is coded as travel or dining. If the purchase is coded as any other category, you’d earn one point per $1 spent.

If you must prepay the hotel rate because of hotel policies, paying with a card could provide additional benefits.

Bottom line

The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection offers a suite of benefits simply for booking your stay through its website or concierge and paying with your Visa Signature credit card.

It’s hard to turn down perks like these, especially with a best-available-rate guarantee. Look for a better public rate within the required 24-hour time period after booking with Visa Signature hotels. If you find a better eligible rate within that time frame, they will match the rate.

Getting the most value out of your benefits starts with being aware of the benefits you’re entitled to and then making sure you get them during your stay. If a benefit isn’t available at a certain hotel, ask if something else can be substituted.
