Credit Karma Weighs In: Platinum Card® from American Express

Are you shopping around for a new credit card? Credit Karma is here to help! Some members of our team are sharing their opinions on the cards in their wallets. In this edition of "Credit Karma Weighs In," our Public Relations Associate, Rick, shares his thoughts on the Platinum Card® from American Express.

The Platinum Card® from American Express is a great card for frequent travelers. While it comes with a $450 annual fee, its many perks, like a flexible rewards program, complimentary access to airport lounges worldwide and 24/7 concierge service, can make the cost worthwhile.

Rick's Ratings

Rewards: American Express regularly offers sign up bonuses for its cards, and the Platinum Card® is no exception. You can earn 40,000 Membership Rewards® points after making $3,000 in purchases in the first three months with your new card. In addition, eligible purchases earn one point per dollar, with purchases at certain retailers occasionally offering more, including five times the number of points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express travel. The true value of the card, however, lies in its many benefits, including complimentary access to over 900 airport lounges worldwide, statement credits for travel incidentals and preferred memberships with partners like Boingo and ShopRunner.

Customer Service: Set to travel, I wanted to make sure my new card didn't arrive while I was abroad. I called American Express, and they offered next-day delivery to either my home or my hotel overseas for free. Since then, I've considered American Express a leader in customer service, as they have frequently exceeded my expectations.
Rick's Customer Service Rating: Five Stars

Application Process: Because I already had a credit card with American Express, much of my personal information was pre-filled after I logged into my account, making applying easier. I was approved in less than two minutes.

Tips and Tricks

Take advantage of the benefits from day one. Some of the card's most popular perks -- airport lounge access, statement credits for travel incidentals and application fee credit for either Global Entry or TSA Pre (TM) -- require enrollment. You can enroll in the perks and programs when you first get your card to maximize your rewards.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. A commonly overlooked benefit of the card is the Premium Global Assist® hotline that can provide 24/7 medical, legal, financial or other assistance services. Additionally, the concierge staff has been able to help me find tickets to concerts and scout out gifts for friends by calling stores on my behalf.

Mix and match your Membership Rewards® points. American Express offers many cards that earn Membership Rewards® points, which are redeemable for gift cards, flights and more. And to make things easier, all of your Membership Rewards® points are automatically combined into one account. For additional value, you can transfer these points to your favorite airline or hotel loyalty program and potentially score an occasional bonus.

Bottom Line

The Platinum Card® from American Express can help provide convenience and a touch of luxury when you're traveling. While the card has a hefty annual fee, the many benefits and perks can help you focus on getting work done or making your vacation more enjoyable.

If you're considering applying for a new credit card, it's generally a good idea to first check out consumer reviews to see what current cardholders really think. If you've got a credit card that you love, consider writing a review to help others out!

Advertiser Disclosure: We think it's important for you to understand how we make money. It's pretty simple, actually. The offers for financial products you see on our platform come from companies who pay us. The money we make helps us give you access to free credit scores and reports and helps us create our other great tools and educational materials.

Compensation may factor into how and where products appear on our platform (and in what order). But since we generally make money when you find an offer you like and get, we try to show you offers we think are a good match for you. That's why we provide features like your Approval Odds and savings estimates.

Of course, the offers on our platform don't represent all financial products out there, but our goal is to show you as many great options as we can.
