When you say "low" what is the number? When you say "score", where did you get it?  Different card companies pull different reports, but bottom line...they all pull a FICO score & if you don't know what it is & what report the lender pulls, don't app anywhere. So...that being said...if your FICO's are in the 500-600 range, you can likely be approved for a Credit One card.  I had one when my scores were in the high 500's.  Even if you have chargeoffs, BK's (discharged), and other red marks, you can get it. The reason I mention this card in particular is because even though they start you out with a low limit, high interest & yearly fees, this card is one you *can* get.  Every 6 mos or less, you can call the cust serv # and request a credit line increase.  I got $100 every 6 mos. BUT...if you get this card, do NOT max it out, pay it off in full every month (before the day the statement closes).  Carrying a balance on a 25-30% interest card is going to kill you & defeat the purpose of what you are trying to do.  I kept my card for about 4.5 years & the day I got a 9% interest 10k limit card, I called them and cancelled the card.  It had served it's purpose & served me well.  It gave me nearly 5 years of clean credit history. I hope this helps!

Do you have to be pre qualified for the approval of a credit one card?

You haven't specified how low your credit score actually is but if it was me applying I would apply for one of the following I have posted below depending how low the credit score actually is.

  • Public Savings Bank Secured Credit Card - apply for this card if your credit score is below 575, they do not do a credit check and should be a guaranteed credit approval. You will need to put down a security deposit (minimum of $200) and will pay an annual fee of $50 but it is much better than other cards offered for people with scores this low.
  • Orchard Bank Credit Card - apply for this card if your credit score is above 585 to around 640 or considered sub-prime. Orchard bank does not guarantee approval but will match you with the best card you could be approved for.
  • Capital One - apply for this card if your credit score is at or above 620 (I have witnessed people with scores below 620 to as low as 540 getting approved but chances of getting approved would be much less). Capital One is similar to Orchard Bank but with better terms and less fees for people with sub-prime credit. Capital One will also match you with a card that meets your needs but approval is not guaranteed.
As I stated above, if I was in your situation these would be my top picks. I have done some research and in my opinion those 3 banks are very fair with people that have low credit scores, and those considered slight to moderate risk or sub-prime compared to some of the other banks that I have seen.
