how long is a foreclosure on record

a bank said it would take 3 years to clear and not reflect on my credit record. is this true.

3 years is the amount of time before you can even try to apply for a FHA loan for a house but typically this things stay on your credit report for 7-10 years

This is what I have heard also.  Unfortunately.  But with the housing market being so bad, I'm hopeful FHA will cut some slack.
