I have been paying or settling old debt that has gone to collections, my question really is how long does it take to reflect positively on my credit score? how much does it really affect the score?

Simply paying off or settling collection debts will not raise your scores. You still have the collection account showing & that in itself is the damage. Paid or not. What you can do is write goodwill letters to each of the collection agencies that you have paid in full. This is best done by email & to an executive. Without knowing who you owed & who is paid, I can't help with how to proceed. Google the term GW letters. I just did & the first link for the fico forums will help you. That entire site is gold!
