I have a copy of my credit report and I heard that if you cant contact them to pay them then you can dispute it and have it removed from your report! Is this true?

Yes. Yes = You dispute the report and if they don't respond within 45 days it'll be removed from your credit report. But that doesn't mean that they can't come back and re-report the account once they see that you owe. If it's in collections AND on your credit report, DON'T make arrangements to settle it in payments at all. You'll want to settle for less than what's owed on it and pay it off 100% at one time. Before you pay, make sure that they agree to remove it from your credit report once it's paid in full. Remember this too: Creditors WILL accept a few cents on the dollar. So, if you owe them $1,000 and it's in collections they'll gladly accept about $100 - $150 to settle the debt. I've done it and it works like a charm. * Tell them you're going to file bankruptcy. * Tell them you simply can afford to pay at all But, whatever you do, NEVER agree to repay 100% of what the amount is owed. I had a collection company settle for $600 out of a $1,466 debt I owed. Although I agreed to that amount, a few days have gone by and then I realized that the "Statute of Limitations" for that debt have expired and I never even sent in the $600 and the debt is still gone from my credit file. This is over 14 months ago... when I started learning about credit responsibilities and how to deal with debt collectors. It's easy.. offer them less than half the amount and they'll take it with pride. They won't refuse it.
