What about opening credit lines as an investment in the future of one's credit score? If I have a healthy credit score now, but want an excellent credit score in say, 4 years, opening several credit lines now and grooming them to achieve higher credit lines over time appear to be an investment worth considering to me. It will raise my credit lines, my credit limit, and over time, establish a credit history more impermeable to the opening of a single credit line. I realize that it is far from instant gratification, but am I right in my hypothesis according to your credit simulators?

I asked Citi to let me change my credit card from one with a revolving credit limit (not reported) to a real credit limit (reported).
