Settlement will hurt your score but there are companies that will negotiate payment terms and interest. Those will not have any negative effect. I'm almost done with mine. Started about 2-3 years ago but the real changes started happening in the last year. Went from 618 to 753 in a year!

How can I recover from my medical bill debt going to collections?
Send certified cease and desist letters to all collection agencies and a copy to the credit companies. Its illegal for them to contact you again at that point. No matter what they say your debt is with the hospital/doctor not the credit agencies. Often you can get the hospital to start making illegal moves which makes it hard for them to collect.
