I have the service. It is $40 a month for the 3G. It's cheaper than ATT and Sprint.
Best of all if you get the A300 dongle (it's green and black), it doesn't soak up a lot of power in your laptop and it's fast enough to watch low-res YouTube videos. It works on Windows, Linux and Mac (Linux takes some hacking but there's instructions if you Google for it).
The coverage is mostly limited to metro areas, so you may get reduced service or no service if you're way out in the boonies. I was able to get it working in some rural areas in Texas and it works great here in Philadelphia on the subways and trains.

I forgot to mention... if you go to a Cricket store to get the modem (get the cheaper green and black one)... all you have to do is insert the modem into a USB port and you are done.
All the software for it is on the modem and it installs itself. Once you get past activation (you click a button), that's it. You can take your laptop into the store to test it out there if you want. It also works in desktop machines.
They didn't do any credit inquiries since this service is a one-month pay ahead plan where you pay for next month's service in advance.
I also have ATT and an iPhone, but ATT still doesn't have tethering. I could not wait any longer for wireless broadband on my netbook PC, so I got this. I love it!!!

3G is a very limited bandwidth service, not designed for high data transfer rates like continuous net surfing. My advice, wait for the much faster 4G service. Sprint already has it in select cities, and I'm sure all the majors will have the capability soon.

3G is not good enough for Hulu and you can only watch low-resolution YouTube videos on it. It's definitely not a replacement for broadband, so I wouldn't try to run XBOX traffic over it. But, basic web surfing, VPN, Outlook and IM run decently on it. It's good enough for all netbook users and those with cheap laptops. If you live in the boonies and want something a bit faster than dial-up, this could be an option, but I would take advantage of the trial period to test the connection from where you're likely to use it and return it to the store if it doesn't work out.

I like the price, but they don't offer broadband service in my state (Virginia). Too bad.
